On June 14, 2018, the Licensed Professional Counselors of North Carolina (LPCANC) teamed up with North Carolina Counseling Association (NCCA) to legislatively advocate for the field of counseling in North Carolina. It was a good turnout for the Short Session in Raleigh with 14 counselors led by lobbyist Ashley Perkinson. The group was made up of counselors serving in education, private practice, and health care.

These counselors met and collaborated at the advocacy breakfast before walking over to Representative (District 85) and LPCANC Representative of the Year, Josh Dobson’s office. Many thanks were offered after his efforts of successful passing House Bill 630 that had occurred late the night before. This bill will continue onto the senate for concurrence. The House Bill 630 supports the inclusion of LPCs as providers and allows them to conduct first evaluations for involuntary commitment in North Carolina. The rest of the day was spent attending the general assembly and meetings with the representatives from the various districts throughout the state.

Other advocacy priorities include: the recognition of LPCs in the areas of telemental health in North Carolina. The goal is to have legislation for greater utilization of telemental health for Chapter 90 providers like LPCs.

Another advocacy priority opposes efforts to consolidate behavioral health licensing boards. The purpose is to recognize that the behavioral health care professionals are separate in training, curriculum, and scope.

The final advocacy priority examines Medicaid transformation to cut down paperwork and expenses and supports reimbursement for behavioral health services.

It was an effective and important day of advocacy at the LPCANC Advocacy day for counselors in the state of North Carolina. It was energizing to collaborate and connect with the NCCA counselors to support the needs of the counseling field. Thank you all for your efforts!
