Stigma of mental illness is real and as counselors, we have a requirement to educate and change the perspectives of people.  The news and politics do not always cast a positive light on mental illness or the people who suffer from this debilitating disease each day.  But first, we have to have a positive view of people with mental illness and help our clients understand the differences between themselves and the illness.  The clients that we see are diverse and come from many different backgrounds.  Some clients may not think they have a problem or be forced into treatment by others.  These clients may suffer from severe and persistent mental illness that decreases insight and affects their perceptions.  We are the ones that need to engage and promote their strengths and abilities.  Counselors will benefit from greater understanding of individuals with severe and persistent mental illnesses to maximize their individual practices.

Learning Objectives:

1. An overview of psychosis
2. Learn strategies to engage and strengthen the therapeutic relationship with clients with psychosis
3. Review of cognitive behavioral therapies and motivational interviewing
